The ECHA is about to announce four SVHCS

The European Chemicals Agency's committee of member states has agreed to identify four substances as substances of high concern.

On 16 June 2020, the European Chemical Agency (ECHA) announced on its website that the Member State Committee (MSC) had agreed to identify 4-substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) : 1-vinyl imidazole, 2-methyl-imidazole, butyl p-hydroxybenzoate and diacetylpyruvate.Another review substance, Resorcinol, previously announced in March, has not been identified as SVHC.The ECHA will update the list of SVHC on its website at the end of June.

 

The information of the four substances identified as SVHC is shown in the following table:

The identification process for SVHC includes a 45-day public comment period.Once a substance is identified as SVHC, it is included in the list of candidates established by REACH, and its inclusion in the list of candidates imposes direct legal obligations on the supplier of the substance, such as:

 

  • Provide safety technical specification;
  • Safe use communication;
  • Reply to customer's request within 45 days;
  • Notification to ECHA is required if the SVHC weight per manufacturer or importer exceeds 1 ton per year and the SVHC content is above 0.1% (w/W).
